Chain Reaction for a Cure supports cutting-edge breast cancer research
by awarding grants to organizations and individuals
in the medical, scientific and pharmaceutical industries that are
seeking to develop promising new targeted breast cancer therapies.
CRFC's mission is to speed up the development of novel life-saving
treatments that will give new hope of long-term survival to women
that now, or in the near future, will be diagnosed with breast cancer.
CRFC will support research that is dedicated to developing new agents
that show promise in controlling or curing breast cancer like targeted
drugs that interfere with cell growth, vaccines and immunotherapy to
strengthen the immune system, monoclonal antibodies that selectively target
tumors, angiostatics that cut off the blood supply that feed tumors, gene
therapies, and drugs that alter the composition of cancer cells and biological
response modifiers. We will also consider funding the further study of
alternative therapies that show some potential in the fight against breast
cancer, such as hypothermia (using heat to destroy tumors). CRFC will not
fund Phase III/IV trials or requests to fund non-treatment related
research such as diagnostic research.
Grant requests are reviewed by Chain Reaction for a Cure's Grant Review
Board Members. CRFC's Grant Review Board is comprised of renowned and
innovative scientific and medical minds as well as breast cancer survivors.
Our Grant Review Board will be charged with identifying, reviewing and
evaluating proposed CRFC-supported clinical and translational research
programs and grant requests. The Grant Review Board will also monitor
the progress of funded research projects. Preliminary grant requests
will be reviewed as they are received and formal grant proposals will
be evaluated and awarded on a quarterly basis.
Chain Reaction for a Cure will post a summary of any research projects
that have been awarded grants. In addition, CRFC will post the results
of any research that has been funded (in whole or part) by Chain Reaction
donations, if said results have been accepted for publication by a medical
or scientific journal or other source.
The following organizations and/or individuals have been awarded research grants by CRFC:
2005 Grants awarded:
A $15,250 grant was awarded to the Health Science Foundation of the Medical University of South Carolina.
The Hollings Cancer Center was awarded a $15,250 grant to help fund a research project titled:
Circulating Myeloid Suppressor Cells in Breast Cancer: Implications for Future Vaccine Development.
This research project hopes to lead to future vaccine developments for early stages of breast cancer.
The grant will fund research that will help Dr. Salem, Dr. Diaz-Montero, Dr. Montero, and Dr. Cole of Hollings Cancer
Center study the immature myeloid suppressor cells that have been found to abnormally increases in the setting of
cancer as well as after certain types of chemotherapy, such as cyclophosphamide.
